description:
- Our old stone farmhouse hugs the hillside above Reuilly, a tiny village on the border of the Picardy and Champagne regions, an hour east of Paris. We overlook the Marne River valley and miles of Champagne vineyards. This is a rolling, scenic countryside, rich in history, between Château-Thierry and Rheims (Reims). Among bed and breakfasts in France few could be better located - between England, Belgium, Germany and the Paris region - for travelers wishing to discover this crossroads of European culture, or just passing through en route to Brittany, Spain or Provence.
- Hundreds of acres of woods and trails behind the house are yours for walking, as well as a private courtyard for relaxing and an indoor swimming pool with jacuzzi, to stay in form and loosen uptight muscles after hours in a car or plane..
- Military history buffs recently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Second Battle of the Marne, turning point of World War One. The terribly evocative cemetery of Belleau Wood is nearby. The American 3rd Division earned its moniker "Rock of the Marne" in July 1918 in the valley below our house, pictured on website with its private courtyard and wood-beamed glass conservatory.
- We are close to Paris by autoroute or train, and offer a central base from which to discover Paris, Picardy and Champagne. Meredith is an architectural historian who will be delighted to point you toward special places to discover in Paris, as well as highlights of our region. Come unwind out here for a few days before taking on the city, or after. Or come to unwind - period! There are many places indoors and out, to sit, read and relax. The house is filled with original art on country themes by contemporary French artists.
- Gourmets will appreciate our Champagne producing neighbors who account for our being on the "Route Touristique de Champagne", as well as the highly regarded restaurant "Auberge le Relais" in Reuilly, awarded a star by the Michelin Guide. From time to time when we have a full house of linguistically compatible guests Meredith will prepare a meal.
- Our four rooms are decorated simply and tastefully. From each you have a view on the courtyard, Meredith's flower, vegetable and herb gardens and the woods beyond. There, as dawn breaks, we often see deer grazing on the hillside meadow, 50 yards from our windows.
- Each room has its own private and modern sanitary facilities, with Grohe showers. As to our heated "endless pool", bring your swim suit and enjoy its extraordinary adjustable swim current.
- Split your trip between Paris and the country. If you are staying in France for a while and would like to spend some time out here, and some time in Paris we can make available our apartment between the Place de la Bastille and the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. Email us for more information.
- We look forward to your visit - Meredith Sykes and Bill Graham.
