description:

  • Kamilari is a quiet, traditional village with 400 locals living in small Greek style houses on the hillside. It's in a beautiful location with rolling hillsides and a mountain view, overlooking the Messara valley on one side and the Libyan sea on the other, only 2.5 km from the beautiful sandy beach at Kalamaki.
  • Kamilari has been inhabited since Minoan times. The name of the village is of Byzantine origin, and is derived from the world "kamilaris" meaning the one who rides a camel. A vaulted Minoan tomb, known as the "Kamilari tomb" has been discovered just outside the village, it is one of the most important tombs found in the Messara valley, objects found here are now in the Archaeological Museum of Iraklion.
  • In the town there are three Greek family restaurants, two old style coffee shops, a pizzeria and a snack bar, all run by local people. Though it is an old town, it has modern conveniences such as mini markets (to buy food and other items) and souvenir shops. Also, near the town area is a small hospital with certified doctors to take care of any medical problems.
  • My name is Michalis Nikitakis and I own and run Ambeliotissa apartments with my wife Ilse. We have two children, Georgos and Sebastian. We very much enjoy having families with children stay with us, so the children can play together and enjoy the safe, child friendly environment.
  • My apartments are located 5 minutes walk from the centre of the traditional village of Kamilari. We are surrounded by Olive groves, and are away from the road so it's very quiet, peaceful and safe for children.
  • Each of my apartments has the following facilities:
    • air conditioning/central heating
    • bathroom with toilet, sink and shower
    • balcony/veranda with a view
    • refrigerator
    • coffee maker
    • small stove
    • pots and dishes
    • free use of swimming pool
    • free use of washing machine
  • We speak Greek, English and Dutch fluently and also understand a little German. The best part of our job is the opportunity we have to meet people from many different countries. We often organise "International" nights where people cook something traditional from their home country and we share it all together with good wine and a lot of fun.
  • We will recommend places for you to visit to make the most of your stay in our beautiful island.

how to get there:

By Plane:
There are many scheduled and chartered flights to the airport in Iraklion. If you tell me ahead of time when you will arrive, I can arrange to have a friendly taxi driver wait in the airport for you with a sign with your name on it. He can then drive you to my apartments (the fare is around 40 euros).
Or I can arrange a to have a hire car of your choice ready for you at the airport, where you be met by a helpful representative who will settle the formalities quickly and take you to your car.

By Car:
Ferries sail daily from Athens to Iraklion. The voyage is eleven hours long and it is fun and relaxing. From Iraklion, it is a one hour drive to Kamilari.
